Coral Gables really is the City Beautiful  

Like so many other cities in the Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Coral Gables’s development came with the Florida land boom in the early 20th century. However, Coral Gables is a little different from other cities. It’s a little more special. Coral Gables was one of the first real planned communities in South Florida. 

Of course, Coral Gables’s story stretches back before the 1900s, but nothing significant happened until the 1920s when George Merrick was inspired by the City Beautiful movement that was sweeping across the United States during this time. 

In 1922, George Merrick inherited the tract of land from his father that would become Coral Gables. Merrick got the idea to build a planned community that would maintain a strict, cohesive aesthetic. This new community would be the model for other cities and towns around the country and even around the world.  

And in 1925, the University of Miami was chartered. Merrick promptly donated 240 acres of land for the university to be built. But that wasn’t it. Coral Gables continued to grow and set its mark as an up-and-coming, well-to-do city with the opening of the Biltmore Hotel and golf course in 1926 and further development. 

Throughout the years, Coral Gables maintained steady population growth with a surge after WWII and during the ‘60s like much of the rest of Florida. However, Coral Gables does set itself apart from other cities in that it’s truly an international city. 

Today, Coral Gables has six sister cities around the globe: Aix-en Provence, France; Cartagena, Colombia; Granada, Spain; La Antigua, Guatemala; Province of Pisa, Italy; and Quito, Ecuador. Coral Gables engaged in its sister city program to establish international ties and celebrate the culture and of some of its international residents.

In Coral Gables, the mayor and four elected city commissioners make up the City Commission which acts as the main legislative body of Coral Gables. All five members of the commission have equal voting power—this includes the mayor and vice mayor. The mayor has no more legislative power over the other city commissioners and is merely the official head of the city. However, the city at large is run by the city manager who is appointed by the commission. 

The current Coral Gables mayor Vince Lago at the age of 43 is the youngest person elected to mayor in the city’s history. Lago was recently elected as mayor in April 2021. However, he has had a long career of civic engagement and service to Coral Gables. Prior to becoming mayor, Lago was a city commissioner for eight years, serving as vice mayor for two of those years, 2019-2021. Lago has also served on the Board of Directors of the Coral Gables Community Foundation where he focused on raising funds to help the less fortunate in the community. In Coral Gables, Lago is known for opposing large-scale developments that might ruin the skyline, aesthetic, or quality of life for Coral Gables residents. Lago has also noted that he is committed to maintaining the classic Coral Gables feel and the historical integrity of the city.
