History of Miami Springs
Miami Springs, a city of aviation
If it weren’t for the “father of Naval Aviation,” Miami Springs might not exist. Like much of the rest of South Florida, Miami Springs’ history follows a particular path, but Miami Springs’s story is a little different than other cities in Miami-Dade and Broward County.
In the 1920s, Glenn Hammond Curtiss came to the area that would one day become Miami Springs. By that time, Curtiss was already recognized as the United States’s foremost expert on aviation, and he was known for making the first long-distance flight in the United States. Alexander Graham Bell even thought of Curtiss as the "the greatest motor expert in the country" and invited him to join the Aerial Experiment Association.
And as soon as Curtiss saw the soon-to-become Miami Springs area, he had big ideas. Curtiss and James Bright began developing the city in the early 1920s. The area was then called the Country Club Estates. Country Club Estates was meant to be a small, somewhat exclusive residential area. Curtiss and Bright wanted to create somewhere where they could live, relax, and raise their families.
In 1923, they built the Miami Springs Golf & Country Club which is now the oldest golf course in Miami. And in 1926, the Country Club Estates area transformed into Miami Springs and was officially incorporated as a city in Miami-Dade County.
Curtiss definitely left his mark on Miami Springs because the city has always been closely connected with the aviation industry. The Miami International Airport is just south of NW 36th Street, and one of Miami Springs's neighboring cities, Opa Locka has a small airport as well. Today, both airports help support the Miami Springs community and employ many of its residents.
Over the years, more and more people and families have moved to Miami Springs. Like many other cities in South Florida, Miami Springs experienced a population boom following WWII in the 1950s and 1960s. And while Curtiss's vision of a residential area was achieved, today Miami Springs is anything but exclusive. It has transformed into a welcoming city that accepts all members of its community. Miami Springs Community
Get involved and learn more about the Miami Springs Community
Moving to anywhere new and finding your place in its community can seem overwhelming and intimidating. It was hard enough being the new kid when you were in school, but now, being the new kid as an adult? Even scarier. Luckily, Miami Springs is a warm and welcoming city full of residents who are involved and care about their community. However, if you want to get a head start, the best way to integrate yourself into any new community is to learn a little bit more about how the community works, starting with the municipal government.
In Miami Springs, the mayor and four other council members make up the Miami Springs City Council. The Miami Springs City Council acts as the city’s legislative body, voting on ordinances and resolutions and establishing various city policies. Each member of the council has equal voting power in all issues; this includes the mayor. The mayor of Miami Springs has no special power over the other council members. Instead, the mayor acts as a ceremonial head of the city, representing the city in a larger sense by attending ribbon-cutting ceremonies and conventions for Florida mayors. However, the city manager who is appointed by the city council acts as the chief administrative officer of the city, overseeing about 125 full-time and 110 seasonal or part-time employees among eight major departments.
The current Miami Springs Mayor Maria Puente Mitchell has lived in Miami Springs since 1985. Before becoming mayor, Mitchell was elected as a council member in 2017, but her service to Miami Springs began long before that. In 1989, Mitchell contacted the Miami Springs Junior Woman’s Club about starting the Miami Springs Bike Path Project. Mitchell wanted to create more bike paths to encourage exercise and healthy habits while increasing the connectivity of Miami Springs. Mitchell’s proposal was a success and made Miami Springs one of the first bike-friendly cities in South Florida. Mitchell also has experience working in the government as the former Manager of Risk Management and Safety for Miami-Dade County. Her connections to Miami-Dade County have also allowed her to foster several important partnerships between Miami Springs, Miami-Dade County, and other organizations. Overall, Mitchell is known for efforts to promote sustainability and health in the Miami Springs community,
For more information about Mitchell or any of the other council members, check out the city’s website for their full biographies and contact information. Miami Springs has a reputation for being a transparent city with a municipal government that is active and involved, so it’s fairly easy to get in contact with any of the council members. To see Miami Springs’s council members in action, check the city’s website for a schedule of upcoming meetings. Council meetings are held every second and fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the city hall.
