History of Weston
How Weston developed
Like many other cities in Broward and Miami-Dade County, Weston first started as nothing more than untamed wilderness. And like other cities, it also eventually developed into the thriving city that we now know as Weston.
Weston got its official start in the 1950s when Arthur Vining Davis managed to accumulate 15,000 acres. Davis was the owner of Arvida, Weston’s primary developer, so, shortly after accumulating the land that would be Weston, Davis set to work on creating the plans for a new city.
Davis’ land would be split up into two different developments, Bonaventure which would be sold and financed as a different area and the Indian Trace development which would someday become Weston.
The plans to develop the Indian Trace community were approved in the early 1980s, with 17,000 planned homes. Shortly after, Arvida changed the name of the Indian Trace community to Weston, and in 1984, Weston saw its first residents with the completion of the Windmill Ranch and Country Isles subdivisions.
By 1991, Weston had around 5,000 residents, and it was decided that three current residents of Weston should be elected to the original board of supervisors that saw the first developments of the Indian Trace community. In 1993, residents were given full control of the board of supervisors with an additional two seats.
In 1995, the board decided that it would be best to incorporate Weston as its own city, so they filed for incorporation. And on May 5, 1996, Weston was officially incorporated as a city in the state of Florida.
In 1997, the separate Bonaventure development voted to become a part of Weston, and finally, on June 3, 1997, Weston had its first elected mayor and city commissioners.
Weston has continued to grow and expand through the years. In 1999, Weston annexed the conservation area along US 27 westward to the L-37 levee from SR 84 to Griffin Road. And then in 2004, Weston annexed the I-75/SR 84 corridor to the north. Weston currently has a total landmass of 25.8 square miles.
Today, Weston is still looking to grow and expand. It has recently focused on creating new parks and improving other public areas, like the Weston Tennis Center. Weston also has plans to add a fire station to the Bonaventure area. In Weston, the mayor and four elected council members make up the City Commission which acts as Davie’s legislative body. All members of the council have equal voting power, and they enact ordinances and adopt resolutions. Each member of the commission, including the mayor, serves four-year terms. In addition, the mayor has no more power than any other member on the council but acts as the presiding officer at commission meetings and the ceremonial head of the city. The city manager who is appointed by the commission oversees the day-to-day operations of the city.
The current Weston Mayor Margaret Brown has lived in Weston since 1999. Brown is the first female mayor that Weston has ever had, and she was elected as mayor in 2020 after having served as city commissioner for four years. And even though Brown has not had a long political career, she has an extensive background in serving her community. Prior to being mayor, she was the Regional Executive Director of the Center for Hearing and Communications in Florida, a not-for-profit agency that provides resources for the deaf and blind communities in South Florida. And she has also served as the Executive Director for the COPD Foundation. In addition, Brown is a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and has an educational background in organizational conflict.
For more information about Brown or any other of the city commissioners, check out the city’s website for their contact information.
